Keynote: Lisa Rivalin - Transformation Pathways July 2026

As part of the DICE N+ Transformation Pathways event held at the Science Museum, London on 1 July 2026, Lisa Rivalin, Senior Staff Systems Engineer at Meta, delivered a keynote exploring how circularity can be embedded into the design, operation and reuse of data centre hardware.

Drawing on Meta’s experience designing and operating its own server infrastructure, Lisa highlighted the growing importance of circularity in the age of AI, where demand for computing hardware is accelerating at an unprecedented rate. She demonstrated how robust measurement, common standards and high-quality sustainability data are critical foundations for identifying opportunities to extend component lifecycles and reduce embodied carbon across digital infrastructure.

The keynote showcased Meta’s work through the Open Compute Project (OCP) to develop shared approaches to carbon accounting, hardware taxonomy and component reuse, while addressing practical challenges such as reliability, data security, compatibility and lifecycle management. Lisa also reflected on the complex relationship between designing for sustainability and designing for longevity, and the need for industry-wide collaboration to unlock greater circularity across the technology sector.
