The IDEALL roadmap – EDI principles for turning lost carbon into a valuable resource that benefits all
The chemical industry, while vital to the global economy, is highly energy-intensive and contributes significantly to environmental degradation and social inequality. Marginalised communities are disproportionately affected through pollution, economic exclusion, and lack of representation in decision-making.
The transition to a Circular Carbon Economy (CCE) offers a chance to break this cycle. The IDEALL roadmap, developed through a comprehensive scoping review and stakeholder engagement (including 75+ participants across sectors), outlines how to ensure this transition is just and inclusive.
Key Inequality Dimensions:
- Global inequality between high- and low-income regions.
- Workplace inequality within domestic industries.
- Geographical inequality within countries.
Strategic Priorities for Inclusion:
Removing Financial Barriers: Making clean technologies accessible and affordable for all.
Dismantling Elitism: Reforming decision-making processes to include underrepresented voices.
Empowering Communities: Supporting place-based approaches that reflect local values and needs.
Diversifying Voices: Ensuring representation across governance, research, and implementation.
Each priority includes actionable pathways to embed equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) into CCE strategies, ensuring vulnerable communities are supported throughout the transition.
