DICE Network+ meet with Datum Datacentres

20 March 2026

On 19 March, a selection of the DICE N+ team and members visited Datum Datacentres at their Farnborough site, where we were hosted by Phil Nicholson.

The visit offered a valuable insight into the bespoke offering Datum provides to its clients, and the range of organisations they serve. This diversity reinforced a key finding from our ongoing data centre deep dive: data centres vary considerably in their models, infrastructure, and client relationships, and cannot be treated as a uniform category.

This has direct implications for how circular economy approaches are developed and applied in the sector. Strategies around hardware reuse, energy recovery, and end-of-life asset management need to be tailored to the specific context of each facility. A circularity framework that works well in one setting may not be appropriate or effective in another. Understanding the operational model and client base of a given centre is therefore an important first step before any meaningful strategy can be developed.

This visit forms part of our wider programme of engagement with the data centre sector, which includes policy analysis, stakeholder interviews, and a published policy brief. If you are interested in how circularity can be applied in this sector, we would welcome the opportunity to hear from you.
